Knossos Palace is located 7 km from Heraklion Airport and receives more than 1,000,000 visitors a year. The reason that makes Knossos Palace the most important attraction of Crete is that it is the center of the first brilliant European civilization, the Minoan Civilization.
The palace was the base of the legendary King Minos who according to Greek Mythology was the son of Europe and Zeus as described in the myth of the Abduction of Europe. In the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion you can find coins of Knossos which represented the Minotaur, the Labyrinth etc. The emblem of Knossos is the lavry (double ax) and the horns of the Bull which can be seen in many parts of Knossos.
