CAR RENTALS FOR NEW DRIVERS – THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

One of the questions we often receive at RentCar.gr, regarding car rentals, is what renter requirements should you meet renting a car for the first time. First, we need to clarify that you are considered a "new driver" if you are 20-24 years old. To rent a car you must hold a full driving license for at least one year. Do you belong to this age group? Then this is what you need to know to get on the road.

  • In contrast to what it is believed, you don’t have to be 25 to hire a car in Crete. Nevertheless, if you are under 25, when hiring a car, it is mandatory to choose the Full Coverage Auto Insurance Package.
  • Make sure you have a valid driver's license and identity card / passport. You also need a credit or debit card at your name/the main driver’s name. The person who signs the car rental agreement is legally responsible for the car, so only their credit card can be used.
  • If you want someone else to drive the rental car you need to declare in advance the additional driver on the rental contract. Otherwise, you, as tenant, will be held responsible for any damage to the vehicle or to third parties. The declaration can be done at any RentCar.gr site throughout the rental period. As a young driver, you have to choose the Full Coverage Auto Insurance Package, so there will be no extra cost for the second driver.
